HISTORICAL PERSON EXHIBIT: Ibn Battuta

Ibn Battuta was a great explorer. Battuta, who was also known as Abū ʿAbd al-Lāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Lāh l-Lawātī ṭ-Ṭanǧī ibn Baṭūṭah, is most famous for documenting his travels around North America and Western Asia in the early 14 century. I think he was very interesting because he was very brave to go places where he did not know anyone and may not have even be able to communicate with spoken language. Ibn Battuta was very courageous  and heroic.

Picture
Battuta was born in Tangier, Morocco in 1304. When he was 21 years old he left home to go on his hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. This three year young trip probably made him fall in love with traveling. His greatest achievements was writing down descriptions of the many places he visited and people he met. He published these descriptions in a book called Rihla. People in Northern Africa were able to learn about the far away lands of China or the Maldives because of this great book. Battuta also worked as a judge in India and in Morocco at different times in his life. He died in Morocco in 1377.

I think Battuta is an important person because he showed people that we should be brave and learn from other people and places. We can find from his explorations that we do not need to be afraid of strangers or people different from us. We should also learn that it is good to keep a journal to help remember the things we see when we travel.

MODERN ARTIFACTS TIME CAPSULE

ARTIFACT 1: BOARD MARKERS

Picture
Board markers, which were commonly used in school classrooms during the late 20th and early 21rst century,  were pens filled with an easily erasable ink and used to write on special white boards. Although these writing tools came in many colors and were an easy way to share information, they were somewhat boring because it took time to write by hand and even longer to draw pictures.

Picture
However, board markers were more exciting than the chalk from earlier generations that they replaced. Board markers were put in this capsule because they were very common a aspect of daily life at school during my lifetime.

In the future, you will likely wear special high-tech glasses which show a screen that teachers can write on or show videos by simply talking into a computer.

ANCIENT RUINS EXHIBIT: Roanoke colony

Picture

Roanoke is a famous lost colony. The British sailor Sir Walter Raleigh founded it in 1584 to be a city for English people making a new home in America.

PictureA 16th Century map of Roanoke Island
Roanoke is a small island in the water off from the American state of North Carolina. The island has many forests and it is known for being very green.

Picture"CROATOAN" written on a tree was the only clue to the mystery.
Although in 1584 more than a hundred English immigrants lived in the “New World” on Roanoke Island, by 1590 no one lived there. When an English ship came back to the colony to see how the new city was surviving, the only artifacts found were some gold jewelry, a few coins, and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. This place is very interesting because it is a mystery what happened to the people who lived on the island.

PictureEnglish people living on the island could have joined the native Croatoan tribe.
Some scientists think that the English people joined a native tribe. These scientists are trying to check to see if there is a link in the DNA of English people living today who are related to the residents who lived on Roanoke island in the 16th Century and the Native American tribal people who live near the island today. I want to visit this place because it looks beautiful but also an important part of American history.
